其原名「One Piece」在故事中為「一個大秘寶」之意。
「海賊王」為台灣原漫畫代理商「大然文化」使用之譯名，
「航海王」為台灣中文版發行權轉移之後的新代理商「東立出版社」因版權關係另取的譯名。
傳說中海賊王哥爾·D·羅傑在死前說出他留下了具有財富、名聲、力量的「ONE PIECE」，
許多人為了爭奪ONE PIECE，爭相出海，許多海賊開始樹立霸權，而形成了大海賊時代。
十年後，蒙其·D·魯夫為了要實現與因救他而斷臂的紅髮傑克的約定而出海，
在遙遠的路途上找尋著強大的夥伴，一起進入「偉大的航道」，目標當上海賊王。
